This is for My Wonderful Grandma Walker, and every grandma out there…
My Mother is So Beautiful
by Leah McDaniel
My mother is so beautiful. She doesn’t know it. She, like so many of us, has the tendency to focus on the things she finds unappealing. A little wrinkle here, a little sag there, she misses the fact that she smiles and a room can light up. She misses that she smiles with her eyes and that is something that it is impossible to miss or fail to appreciate. And when she smiles with her eyes you see a vibrant woman that has a young heart and youthful beauty. But when we, as the collective, look at ourselves with a microscopic focus on the things we see as needing change, we can miss the beauty that is so apparent to the rest of the world.
A dear friend of mine lost her grandmother recently, a grandmother that was strong, and spunky, and a little ornery. This dear friend of mine may not realize that she has an inner strength, a determination, and a fortitude that comes from within, in many ways from this grandmother that touched her life. I think this is the time of year, around Mother’s Day, that we should all take a moment to look at our Mothers and Grandmothers and thank them. Thank them for all the little things that they have given us. Be it the green in our eyes, or the strength in our bellies. Pink dot is the place I see as a community for us all to connect with our own beauty. However you define it, however you seek to improve or accentuate it, Pink dot is a safe place to look in a mirror and try on the fire-engine red lip color you’ve always wanted to try, but felt it was made for that fiery-friend that you had in high-school that always got the boy’s attention. It’s never too late or too early to find your voice, discover your beauty or define your style. I’m thankful for my smile, and I don’t tell my Mom often enough how beautiful she is, or do I thank her for all that she has given me. So as a belated Mother’s Day note…Thank you Mom.
